What I love about blogging is the opportunity to attend worthy parenting events and reflect upon my own style of parenting or look back on how I was raised as a child. Because, I think there is a strong correlation between the two. It's either you follow the style of your parents in raising your own kids, or you completely go the other way!
Dr. Leticia Ho, had my mind backtracking to the 70's when I was just a kid...

ME WITH MY CHUBBY CHEEKS AT AGE 3 :)
I remember when I was in 5 years old, I was so fascinated with the piano. Someone gave me a toy piano as a gift, and before I knew it, I was playing familiar tunes like "twinkle twinkle little star" and "do-re-mi" from the Sound of Music. I remembered my nanay telling her friends, "look, she can play a song without anyone teaching her". Later on I discovered that I can play based on OUIDO. When I got older, I asked my nanay if I can get formal piano lessons. And her reply was (I find it funny and interesting now, but back then, I felt it was too unfair) -- "wag ka na mag aral. una, wala naman tayo pambili ng piano, di kasya sa bahay natin. Pangalawa, kasabihan, malas daw ang may malaking piano sa bahay. Pangatlo, praktis ka ng praktis, di na kita maaasahan sa mga gawaing bahay kasi baka kalabasan mo, pasmado". This is not a joke, this is her reply :)
Looking back, after listening to Dr. Ho's lecture, I said to myself... what if my mom agreed to let me take some piano lessons? Will I be a musician now? A composer? Will my life be different from what it is now?
Of course I cannot anymore bring back the hands of time. But Dr. Ho stressed the importance for parents to observe their children and find that innate talent in them, and be responsible enough to Nurture the talent early on. Without nurturing, without parents' support, it will not bloom into its fullest potential.
And then I reflected, based on my own experience, what did I do to my own kids? Sadly, I wasn't able to support them 100%. Why? Because I was a working mom. All I knew was, I supported them in everything school related; tried to educate them by frequently travelling - me and my hubby believed in learning thru experience; Later on, when we lied low on work, we were able to support our kids' soccer interest.
