CELEBRATE CHINESE NEW YEAR WITH THE CHAN LIM FAMILY OF ARTISTS

I have always been interested in the arts. But when it comes to visual arts, particularly drawing and painting, I must admit, they are not my expertise. My art teachers  have always told me, that I hold the pencil and brushes too tight. In short gigil na gigil.

When it comes to watercolor painting, the secret is how to master the brush strokes. That includes control of how to hold the brush.

On my second time to attend the quick workshop with the family at SM Megamall last January 27 -- I learned that to develop your skills as an artist -- you have to constantly
practice.

Some of the students of the Chan Lim family, who became my teachers that afternoon said, they would sometimes devote an entire week for a particular brush stroke. That is how rigid their practice the art of Chinese brush painting.

These were some of the students I met two years ago.

I compared my Chinese brush painting of the bamboo from 2017 to 2019. Hmm... I can see a little improvement, you agree?   :)

BE A PART OF BIG BENTA MARKETPLACE AND EARN MORE

TRUE STORY:

When it comes to career/work, I am the type of person who is not fond of "change".  If something works for me, then by all means, I will do it over and over again, but always to the best of my ability.

That is why when I graduated with a degree in Communication Arts in UST in 1992 - I was in a hurry to put into practice what I studied in college. I landed my very first job at a TV network, working as a production assistant. But it did not take long before I found out what I really wanted to do for the rest of my life -- that is WRITING.  And I did everything to pursue that passion - including sleepless nights, bullying from bosses, heartaches of revising scripts over and over again... I accepted all of those, because I knew it will be hurdles that will contribute to my craft as a writer.  I was right all along. Because I am still a writer to this day. I had a very colorful writing career for the said TV network for 20 years, before eventually decided to shift to freelancing.

HOW HARD DID AGING HIT YOU? LET PIOLANG 24K GOLD MASK DO THE TRICK!

I have been seeing a lot of "2009 vs. 2019 How Hard Did Aging Hit You" photo challenge in Facebook, wherein you are required to post your profile photo from ten years ago and compare it to your profile photo now.  What I find so funny is.... a lot of people are posting their present photos with too much filter on it, that sometimes, I cannot even recognize the person  :)

Fact is: everyone seems to be obsessed on how to stay and look young. Hey!  I am not denying that I am also interested in achieving that. The secret (which I work hard to follow) a good 8-hour sleep, lots of water, fruits and veggies galore and treating your skin (the largest organ of your body) to some kind of pampering from time to time.

NURTURE YOUR CHILD'S GIFT

What I love about blogging is the opportunity to attend worthy parenting events and reflect upon my own style of parenting or look back on how I was raised as a child.  Because, I think there is a strong correlation between the two. It's either you follow the style of your parents in raising your own kids, or you completely go the other way!

Dr. Leticia Ho, had my mind backtracking to the 70's when I was just a kid...

BACK IN THE 70's

ME WITH MY CHUBBY CHEEKS AT AGE 3  :)

I remember when I was in 5 years old, I was so fascinated with the piano. Someone gave me a toy piano as a gift, and before I knew it, I was playing familiar tunes like "twinkle twinkle little star" and "do-re-mi" from the Sound of Music.  I remembered my nanay telling her friends, "look, she can play a song without anyone teaching her". Later on I discovered that I can play based on OUIDO. When I got older, I asked my nanay if I can get formal piano lessons. And her reply was (I find it funny and interesting now, but back then, I felt it was too unfair) -- "wag ka na mag aral. una, wala naman tayo pambili ng piano, di kasya sa bahay natin. Pangalawa, kasabihan, malas daw ang may malaking piano sa bahay. Pangatlo, praktis ka ng praktis, di na kita maaasahan sa mga gawaing bahay kasi baka kalabasan mo, pasmado".  This is not a joke, this is her reply  :)

Looking back, after listening to Dr. Ho's lecture, I said to myself... what if my mom agreed to let me take some piano lessons? Will I be a musician now? A composer? Will my life be different from what it is now?

Of course I cannot anymore bring back the hands of time. But Dr. Ho stressed the importance for parents to observe their children and find that innate talent in them, and be responsible enough to Nurture the talent early on. Without nurturing, without parents' support, it will not bloom into its fullest potential.

And then I reflected, based on my own experience, what did I do to my own kids? Sadly, I wasn't able to support them 100%.  Why?  Because I was a working mom.  All I knew was, I supported them in everything school related; tried to educate them by frequently travelling - me and my hubby believed in learning thru experience; Later on, when we lied low on work, we were able to support our kids' soccer interest.
